Have you ever thought what is the life force of our very existence? Yes, you are right it is our breath (Prana) which keep us alive.
‘Pranayam’ is combination of two words “Prana' and ‘Ayam’. Prana which is life force and Ayam means control.
So, it can be said that pranayam is simply a practice of breath regulation.
As food is important for body providing energy to do various tasks, so is pranayam, for the mind. It helps to connect body and mind.
It has many physiological and psychological benefits. It helps in removing toxins from body thus preventing onset of various diseases.
Pranayam involves a practice in which one learns how to inhale, hold and exhale breath. Control of breath helps one to live a healthier life.
The benefits of pranayam have been exhaustively researched.
According to various studies :-
1. It helps to decrease the anxiety and stress by calming down the nervous system.
2. It helps in good sleep. If we do pranayam just for 5 mins at bed time, it helps to calm down the heart rate and release of melatonin hormone which is responsible for inducing sleep.
3. With regular practice it increases mindfulness and helps to focus on present.
4. It is helpful in increasing lung capacity.
5. 12 weeks of practice helps in enhancing cognitive functions and sharpens memory.
So let’s start today. It’s never too late, if you haven’t practiced till now.
